PWP hospital-based geriatric psych nurse. "Today I was reading an article about a Parkinson's Disease treatment, and encountered the unfortunate phrase "(so-and-so) was losing her identity to Parkinson's..." Now, I've only been diagnosed since March, so my perception may be different than that of a long-term PWP (Person With Parkinson's). But regardless if I'm up in the morning and functioning as a nurse, or totally disabled in a nursing home, I will still be me!"

I am a patient in a VA Medical Center in a program known as ADHC [Adfult Day Care Health Center]. The program is primarily for patients with physical debilitating conditions. Most of the attendees are stroke, Parkinson, MS, and mild dementia problems. Most of us come in on a 2, 3. or 5 day a week basis as outpatients primarly to enble us to live independently and to give caregivers some relief. I have been a daily attendee for 14 plus years and have seen many come in and leave, either to extended care, Alzeimer's Unit or Hospice. Some go to private nursing homes. I haave met several Parkinson sufferers in my 14 years, both paralytic and the tremorous people. After being exposed to their condition I ordered a VRS Tape from CBS 60 Minutes that showed the surgery that has been developed to control tremors. For people under 65 with ths disease I heartedly recommend viewing the tape. They may wish to see if they qualify for this surgical marvel.
